Engr. Chua: ISO is journey towards excellence

The Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus held a two-day orientation on Quality Management System (QMS) on May 8–9, 2017 at the AVR 2. Serving as resource person was Engr. Dexter T. Chua of CQL Business Systems Consulting.

Said orientation is part of a series of steps being spearheaded by the Management Committee as the Campus aims for an ISO certification this year, in compliance with the Good Governance Conditions of the Memorandum Circular dated May 12, 2016 on the Inter–Agency Task Force on the Harmonization of National Government Performance Monitoring, Information and Reporting Systems or Administrative Order No. 25, series of 2011.

The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies.

As Campus Director Salvador B. Romo emphasized, we are aiming for a certification on our first application. A certification would be good for three years and a visit could merit a renewal. As ambitious as it may seem, it would also be a persistent thought to include in the target the very prestigious Philippine Quality Award (PQA) given by the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Engr. Chua stressed the following Quality Management Principles: Customer Focus, Leadership, Engagement of People, Process Approach, Improvement, Evidence-based Decision Making, and Relationship Management.

The workshops included small group discussions and several exercises on SWOT analyses as well as presentation of outputs. Another highlight of the activity was an overview and brief hands-on of the 5S Principles in the workplace.

The 5s Principle sets the correct mindset for any agency or institution aiming for ISO certification. It will mean more accountability from the workers while also ensuring a more organized, cleaner, and safer work area. With workers maximizing the available space and time, the efficiency of processes and work practices is likewise guaranteed.

It will be a long and hard way but as Engr. Chua quipped, “The pursuit for ISO certification is a journey toward excellence.”

PSHS-CVC students reap AMC awards

ACING THE AMC. These PSHS–CVC scholars earn the fruits of their labor as they show their Certificate of Distinction from the Australian Mathematics Competition. Six students of Philippine Science High School–Cagayan Valley Campus were conferred the third highest award in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). In the exam which was given last July 2017, the results which was released last January 2017 revealed that six of the scholars were awarded Distinction Award.

Edrian Paul Liao (8–Rosal), Joanne Micaela Dizo (8–Rosal), John Mikylle Decena (9–Fermium), Christlen Carlo Olivares (10–Muon), Jose Benjamin dela Cruz (10–Graviton ) and Christian Marthus Gombio (10–Muon ) garnered scores that belonged to the top 13% of all the students who took the test.

Moreover, 22 students whose scores belonged to the top 50% were awarded Certificate of Credit. Eleven of them came from Grade 8, four from Grade 9, and seven for Grade 10 successfully qualified in this level.

The exam was composed of 30 problems which they solved within seventy-five minutes and was conducted simultaneously in over 30 countries worldwide.

Since 2008, PSHS–CVC has been joining the AMC and through the years, the students were consistent in giving their best and in earning recognition for the school.

We Make Change Work for Women at CVC

In response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s first SONA, directing the first National Women’s Month Celebration under the new leadership to focus on partnership for change and full implementation of the Magna Carta for Women (Republic Act 9710), captured through the theme: WE Make Change Work for Women, Philippine Science High School–Cagayan Valley Campus held its month-long observance of the Women’s Month last March 2017.

The celebration kicked off with a simple launch during the March 6 flag rites, spearheaded by the Grade 10 Speech class. Selected students took on the roles of different women leaders. As challenging as it was for the male students, it served as a reawakening about the daily struggles women all over the world go through in order to advance their rights. At Speech class, 13 students served as ambassadors of good will as they became the voice of women empowerment in different settings across cultures and history. They simultaneously delivered their advocacy speeches at different stations around campus to talk of youth rights, women’s suffrage, women in politics and in war–torn areas, and women who have made a difference in their respective fields.

March also saw the installation of freedom boards promoting #BeBoldForChange, an interactive social media platform for Pisay CVC netizens to express their insights on actual steps we can take to pursue significant change.

The culminating activity for female personnel was made possible by the GAD Focal Point System, chaired by Director Salvador B. Romo with the assistance of FAD Chief Raymundo C. Manaligod and CID Chief Aimee Marie c. Gragasin, Ph D. Held on March 17, Para Kay Juana included a film viewing session at the AVR 1 featuring Mila, a Filipino movie about a woman in search of true love and happiness while also toiling to find meaning in her role as a teacher. Following it was a short forum on how each one is similarly coping with the challenges of being a woman. The day ended with #JuanaFit, a fun–filled wellness activity for all via a zumba session with Mr. Heide S. Albina.

The GAD Day for students was marked with a whole-day Career Day for Grades 9–11 featuring a distinguished panel of resource persons from different areas of specialization. The talk was held on March 24 in partnership with the Guidance Office. The panel consisted of guests representing the STEAM areas, including Batch 2005 alumnus Mark Jim G. Balido who spoke on Geology.

Capping Women’s Month is the Cervical Cancer Awareness symposium held on March 29–30 at the Multipurpose Hall. Serving as resource person was Dr. Mary Jane L. Publico, a public practitioner specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The activity was an eye opener to all participants after having been given an overview of the danger signs of and prevention against diseases of the female reproductive system.

It was a productive and meaningful celebration indeed as we look forward to more worthwhile activities with GAD Chairperson, Director Romo, pledging his continued support for women’s cause and placing premium on employee health and welfare through a sustainable fitness program.

Lateral Admissions Qualifying Examination (LAQE)


The Registrar

I. Criteria for Eligibility

A student, who has finished grade 7 or grade 8 outside the PSHS System, may be allowed admission/entry to the PSHS provided slot is available and s/he fulfills the following requirements:

  1. Should be a Filipino citizen with no pending application as immigrant in any foreign country;
  2. Should belong to the upper 5% of his/her class and/or should have a grade of 85% and above in all subjects;
  3. S/he should have a character rating of at least VS (Very Satisfactory) or its equivalent; and
  4. Student's score in the test for lateral entry must meet the regional or national mean score in the PSHSS Achievement Tests (i.e. of the region where the receiving campus is located or the national mean score in teh case of Main Campus applicants) in each of the following three (3) subjects;
    1. Mathematics
    2. Science
    3. Communication Arts (English).

II. Procedure for Application

  1. Applicants must submit the following on or before April 17, 2017
    1. An accomplished application form including certification from parents of no pending application for immigration in any foreign country.
    2. Certification from the present school enrolled in regarding academic grades and character rating:
    3. Two (2) recent 1 x 1 ID pictures;
    4. A none–refundable processing fee of PhP 100.00; and
    5. A photocopy of the student's report card, with the original copy brought along for verification purposes.
  2. The PSHS Campus Registrar issues the Accreditation Examination Permit upon completion and evaluation of all requirements submitted by the applicant. The Permit shall clearly state the particulars regarding the schedule of the examination and the things to bring on examination day (See Annex C: Accreditation Examination Permit).
  3. The accreditation examination will be administered simultaneously on April 26* in the PSHS campuses where slots are available.
