The Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC) is a nationwide organization devoted in upholding the significance of science clubbing and in promoting Public Understanding of Science, Technology and Environment (PUSTE). PSYSC, as the frontrunner of the science clubbing movement, continues to celebrate the National Science Club Month (NSCM) every September to science clubs all over the country with activities that would enhance not just the academic perspective of each science clubber but their environmental and social awareness as well. For this year, NSCM 2017 has the topic of Geoscience with the theme: EarthBeat: Excavating the Abyss, Pulsing the Current, Steering the Youth as Stewards of Sustainable Development. The activities involved were the National Science Clubs Summit, PSO National Eliminations, I Teach Science Seminar (ITSS), and MathSciAKa.

Last September 9, 2017, three Grade 10 students namely Angela Joy G. Agcaoili (Graviton), Alexandrea C. Sion (Muon) and Lord Peter Robin Dustin L. Suyat (Muon) competed in the PSO National Eliminations, an inter–school quiz competition for students from all over the country. The National Eliminations was a two–hour written multiple choice examination taken individually. The accumulated scores were ranked and the top 20 teams with the highest scores in all the testing sites nationwide will be the official participants to the National Finals. The Philippine Science High School team garnered First Place in the National Eliminations for Region 2 but did not qualify for the National Finals. Alexandrea C. Sion was also awarded for being the Top Scorer in the Region.

Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus launched its Science Odyssey highlighted by activities anchored on the theme "science for the people", August 1–3, 2017 at its campus.

Elementary pupils and junior high school students from different divisions of Cagayan Valley competed in S&T project pitching, laboratory skills assessment and poster presentations.

The two day activities also featured exhibits and demonstrations of teachers through an Open House in Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Technology, Computer Science and Research.

"Help us build a better community through science and technology" said Engr. Sancho Mabborang, Regional Director of DOST Region 2, during the opening program.

In his speech, he also emphasized that Region 2 depends so much on agriculture and pointed out how science, technology and research have a tremendous impact in the region and in the country as a whole.

The winners in the contested activities will be awarded during the NSTW regional celebration to be held at Cauayan City, Isabela on August 14–17, 2017.

The launching of the Science Odyssey is in consonance with the celebration of National Science and Technology Week which is anchored on the practical use of various technological products and research output.

The activities lined up for this year's NSTW are science and technology fora on agriculture, health, nutrition, disaster preparedness management, and manufacturing.

A series of regional science and technology fairs will also be held in every region in the country until December, which aims to give the public a unique experience on how science and technology work for a better life.



Before anything else, please allow me to thank the Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus headed by Director Salvador B. Romo for having me here today as your guest speaker. We, in the Department of Science and Technology, are very pleased to see your valuable efforts and strong support in promoting science and technology for countryside development. It is indeed a privilege to inspire young students from across the region, our future researchers, scientists, and engineers!

Let me start my talk by asking you some questions. Lubos niyo bang kilala and inyong rehiyon, Cagayan Valley Region?

If yes, I'm sure you already know what is the Corn Capital of the Philippines? (Ilagan City, Isabela)

Who can give me the other two well–renowed titles given to Enrile, Cagayan and San Mateo, Isabela? (Peanut Capital and Mungo Capital of the Philippines)

Aside from these amazing facts, Region O2 is also the second top roducer of 'palay' in the entire country. These made the 54.4% of the total employment or 823,000 people out of the more than 1.5M employment in the region, under the agriculture sector according to the Philippine Statistics Authority Report in 2015. Ganyan kalaki and saklaw ng ating agrikultura sa hanapbuhay ng mga taga Region 02.

Region 02 is also very active in terms of Research & Development Agenda implementations. We have already the Citrus R&D Center found in Nueva Vizcaya State University. This center aims to conserve and document citrus cultivars and available local citrus genetic resources for the purpose of breeding, research and utilization in the Philippines. Magkakaroon na tayo ng Central databank system ng mga citrus fruits all over the country na may pontential for local introduction and improvement.

Citrus industries in the region are expected to benefit from this undertaking. Separate studies for the "Value Chain Analysis of Citrus in Cagayan Valley", "Development of Pest and Disease Management Systems for Sustainable Citrus Production in Cagayan Valley" and the "Establishment of Quality Planting Materials Production System for Citrus in Nueva Vizcaya" are now currently being studied by different researchers in NVSU.

On the other hand, the Isabela State University has long been stablished the Cagayan Valley Small Ruminants Research Center. This center facilitates the conduct of various research and development activities on goat and sheep production in Region 2. Today, it largely contributes to the improvement of the goat industry in the Philippines, making it a sustainble livestock enterprise for every Filipino. Also, the University has their own Artificial Insemination Center.

Now, here is the situation. We are currently facing the challenges brought about by climate change and disaster risks. Just last year, a very strong typhoon, ang pangalang hinding–hindi ko makakalimutan, "Super Typhoon Lawin" was recorded as the strongest typhoon in the Philippine History. It was last October 19, 2016, when Lawin hit Cagayan Valley destroying more than P7 Billion on agriculture, agro–fishery, government infrastructures, health facilities, national and provincial roads and bridges.

This unfortunate event is just one of the many lessons for us to try harder in creating more resilent and systematic plans, applying appropriate and relevent state–of–the–art equipment and tools, Kung paano natin mapaghahandaan and mga epektong dala ng Climate Change and Disaster Risks sa tulong ng Science, Technology at Innovation.

Allow me to share to you some of the significant researchers of the science communities in addressing the effects of Climate Change in the field of energy and agriculture.

Who are from Cauayan City here? Or those who have been to Cauayan? Nakita niyo na ba yung mga E–Trikes natin?

The E–Trikes, developed by engineers of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, are e–vehicles that do not comsume any fossil fuel as source of power, therefore, there are no emission of carbon monoxide. In short, these modern transports are environmental–friendly. Here's another fact, Cauayan City is the first city nationwide where E–Trikes and E–CharM, also known as "Charging in Minutes", piloted the said innovation.

Isa kasi sa mga advocacies ng ating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, ay mabawasan ng at least 70% ang carbon emission ng bansa. This is one of the many ways to address Climate Change. And we, in the DOST through the leadership of Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña, have committed our support to achieve this goal between year 2020 to 2030.

Another research funded by DOST–Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (PCAARRD), is the Carrageenan Technology, also known as "Carrageenan Plant Food Supplement." This technology was developed by our national scientists and researchers from the DOST–Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and the National Crop Protection Center of the University of the Philippines, Los Baños.

Carrageenan Technology has been proven effective in the rice plants of many farmers in the region. Ms. Josefina Talang is one of our beneficiaries who pilot–tested the effectivity of the technology. According to her, the rice yield increased from 130 cavans to 175 cavans. Imagine that increase? Ilang libo ring dagdag yan sa kita nya.

Aside from 15 to 30% increase in rice–yield, the carrageenan technology also fights Tungru viruses and provides the rice plants an extensive root growth that can withstand typhoons as observed in their studies in Pulilan, Bulacan.

The products or researchers such as E–Trikes, CharM and the Carrageenan Technology are undoubtedly playing a big role on the needs of our society today.

The challenge therefore to you, as future scientists, engineers and researchers, is to continue honing your abilities and knowledge in the field of science, technology, engineering and math. Later on, you will be taking the roles of providing solutions to the country's pressing problems in agriculture, your contributions in finding new methods and applications of smart–agriculture, climate–resilient crops and the use of cleaner energy for the country.

As realy as now, we are already counting and believing in your own little ways and efforts to contribute in the national development of the country. Marami na ang mga napaparangalang mga Pilipino, professional man o tulad niyong mga high school students pa lang, dahil sa mga significant contributions nila sa ating bansa. We are not limiting the conduct of researches to only few, kundi para sa lahat.

Ilang high school students na ba ang nanalo sa national o international contests sa larangan ng siyensiya at teknolohiya? Marami na.

Last 2013, Judel Jay A. Tabsing of Panabo National High School in Davao del Norte was one of the 1,600 young innovators in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel–ISEF) and bagged the titles as "4th Grand Award winner". Intel–ISEF is an event that recognizes the brightest young innovators worldwide in the fields of fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

On that year also, another award–winning innovation anchored in the theme "Future of Energy" made by PSHS juniors namely Creo Baylon, Miguel Ortega, and Otto Lorenzo Uylangco, topped the Project Tuklas Science Contest sponsored by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporatiion (Shell), in coordination with the Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev) and AIESEC Philippines.

Also, last May 30, 2016, a group of students from PSHS Cagayan Valley Campus have undergone research and laboratory skills training in our Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory in Tuguegarao City in preparation for their national competition dubbed as the "5th ASEAN Plus 3 Junior Science Odyssey". Luckily, together with PSHS Central Visayas, they won the 2nd and 3rd grand prizes.

You might be thinking and doubting your capabilities and say, "hindi namin kasing lalim mag–isip ang certified researchers, bata pa kami at limited lang ang kaya naming magawa," but your own innovations might be a great start, a stepping stone that can be used by our scientists to carry–out bigger and better innovations in the future.

Sa kasalukuyan, isa sa mga key priorities ng DOST ang pagpapatibay at pagpapalakas sa human resource development ng ahensya. Alam niyo bang ang bilang lamang ng conferred national scientists sa buong Pilipinas ay nasa 150 lamang? Too few to study all possible solutions to the problems of more than 100M Filipinos.

In addition, out of the 4,100 members of the National Research Council of the Philippines, there are only 27 members from Region 02. Fortunately, last July 24, 2017, the NRCP already established its first Regional Chapted in Cagayan Valley attended by more than 200 local researchers. Its establishment will surely complement to a more harmonized Regional Research & Develpment Agenda.

The scarcity of technology–based workforce is the main reason why we are intensifying our S&T Scholarships in the countryside. Ang gusto namin sa DOST, makita niyo yung mga oportunidad na maaring maibigay ng aming ahensiya kapag naging DOST Scholars kayo.

In DOST, we offer Sciene and Technology Undergraduate Scholarships 2018 for Grade 12 students and the Junior Level Science Scholarships (JLSS) 2017 for Third Year college students who wanted to pursue their careers in the field of S&T. On&ndahs;going po ang pagtanggap ng aming opisina sa mga requirements ng mga gustong maging DOST Schoars. You can also submit your papers in our Provincial Science and Technology Centers in Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Batanes and Nueva Vizcaya.

Gusto nyo bang maging tulad ni Dr. Mudjikeewis Dalisay Santos? He was awarded as an Outstanding Young Scientists and the first and only Scientists I of the Bureau of Fish and Aquatic Resources–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and the 2nd scientists after 63 years history of BFAR in the whole in the country.

Biruin nyo, pag naging scientist kayo, tulad ni Dr. Mudji, bukod sa nakatulong na kayo sa bansa natin, may malaking possibility rin na isunod rin sa mga pangalan niyo ang islang nadiscover niyo o gawing scientific name yung mga apelyido niyo. Plus high income salaries with allowances for travels abroad and TV interviews and appearances!

So sino ang gusto maging future scientists sa inyo? Pakitaas ang kamay. (May scholarship na agad sa akin ang mga may gusto.)

To our dear teachers, continue to guide them in boosting their performances, their skills and knowledge. Let's intensify our support to them by providing first–hand experiences in various laboratory exercises and investigatory projects. Expose them to national and international S&T contests. Huwag po tayong magsasawang gabayan sila.

Students, each of you are the innovators of tomorrow, the thinkers of the future. Whatever you decided to become today will determine the future of the next generation. Help us in shaping a better Philippines with Science, Technology and Innovation.

Pisay CVC Men MOVE Chapter with Aklan–MOVE Members and Organizers.

In a genuine move to engender love and care for women and children, Philippine Science High School Cagayan Valley Campus male employees organized the Men Opposed to V.A.W Everywhere (MOVE) after a GAD seminar last July 4-6 at 24/7 Resort Hotel, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

MOVE–Aklan Chapters headed by some founding members, officers and Board of Trustees facilitated the seminar workshop entitled Gender and Development Seminar: Men Talking to Men about Manhood and the Organization of ‘Men Opposed to VAW Everywhere’ (MOVE) of PSHS-CVC.

“To be able to show deeper love and care to women and children, we need to understand first our nature, tendencies and frailties as men,” said Mr. Lucky Damaso, one of the participants.

Enthemed #BeHerVoice, the seminar included lecture, discussions, group dynamics about sex, gender, issues and concepts that affect men.

Speakers and facilitators also shared how MOVE-Aklan came into being and how it made the province of Aklan a learning hub for anti–VAW.

The GAD Seminar and organization of MOVE-PSHS-CVC chapter was the brainchild of Campus Director Dr. Salvador B. Romo, who intends to spread the worthwhile objectives of the organization to the other PSHS Campuses.

After the seminar, officers and BOT were elected to spearhead the activities of organization in the coming days, in which Mr. Jesse Brian A. Basilio was elected President and Jay-Ar Mapilis as Vice President.

The other officers include Mr. Phillip Addauan, Secretary; Sadiri Corpuz, Treasurer; Orcene Cancino, Auditor and Heherson Tolentino, P.I.O.

Dr. Romo, Harold Gallo, Raymundo Manaligod, Leopoldo Bernal Jr, Julius Garcia and Raymund Velasco composed Board of Trustees.

“MOVE may be used a primary arm of GAD advocates most especially for the officers, to plan and deliver basic intervention programs that cater to gender sensitivity issues and might be of great help for closer monitoring, fostering, and developing the concept of women empowerment,” said Vice President elect Mapilis.

Officers and members of the newly created organization were inducted also by the MOVErs from Aklan.

The eleven MOVE officers and members of Aklan are spearheaded by the speakers namely; Maranatha E. Vargas, Leenard M. Cristobal, Paul Adrian M. Pelayo, Jones R. Arrieta.
