“We do not conduct earthquake and other disaster mitigation drills just for compliance but we do this to lessen the impact of natural and man–made catastrophes”, said Ms. Eva T. Agamata, Chief of Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee (NV–PDRRMC) during the Disaster Preparedness seminar for students and employees, August 4, 2016.

The half–day activity focused on awareness, educational–session about disaster preparedness and simulation drills during earthquakes.

“Angtaonghandasaanumangsakuna ay alamangginagawa, and if that happens, you can assist others when disasters happened”, she mentioned.

Dr. Salvador B. Romo, Campus Director, highlighted in his message that everybody can be a victim of disaster, so everyone must be ready and disciplined.

“Natural disasters are inevitable and unexpected, and the least we can do is to be aware, empowered and equipped with practical knowledge”, added Dr. Romo.

Agamata mentioned in her lecture that the government is serious about disaster mitigation and its ultimate goal is “Zero Casualty”.

“We do not entertain panic during disasters but we should always have our presence of mind”, she stated.

The students and employees participated in actual drills in Academic Buildings and Dormitories facilitated by the PDRRMC and Bureau of Fire Protection personnel.

Agamata also suggested that the school must have a disaster coordinating committee to organize and review contingency plans of the school.

Philippine teams powered by scholars of Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus and Central Visayas Campus grabbed 2nd and 3rd grand prizes and garnered gold medals and various awards in the 5th ASEAN Plus 3 Junior Science Odyssey (APT JSO) held at University of the Philippines – Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines, June 12-18, 2016.

PH Team A consisted of PSHS-CVC Grades 11 scholars Hannah Keren Duque, Mark Ely Namoro and Grade 10 Jose Benjamin dela Cruz.

Pisay-CVC Grade 10 scholars Nicole Betina Pascual, Dionella Jitka Quinagoran and Christlen Carlo Olivares comprised PH Team C.

Team A received gold in Biology and silver in both Chemistry and Physics while Team C pocketed silver in both Biology and Chemistry and bronze in Physics.

The scholar participants demonstrated laboratory skills in three fields: Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Moreover, dela Cruz and Quinagoran were awarded a gold medal and a bronze medal respectively in a separate event of project pitching by mixed country groups.

PSHS-CVisC also sent six contestants to represent the country during international competition.

The team of CVisC scholars Francis Jether S. Siao, Joseph Karl C. Salva Jr., and Sean Dominic T. Abella ranked third over-all third.

Philippine delegation managed to take home 15 medals through the combined efforts of both PSHS campuses.

Designed to develop and nurture the skills and talents of young individuals, APT JSO is an annual Science and Technology (S&T) contest for gifted students aged 13-15 living within ASEAN Plus Three Region which makes up of China, Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Sweden and Southeast Asian countries.

This year’s competition anchored on the theme, “Climate Change and the Rainforest”.

Genalyn Viloria and Mark Merrill Mesa of the PSHS-CVC served as coaches of the PH teams A and C.#

With Typhoon Carina exiting Philippine territory, new school year entered in the history books of Philippine Science High School as it opened its first school day, August 1.

The opening day kicked off with a flag ceremony headed by Dr. Salvador B. Romo, Campus Director.

A Holy Spirit Mass followed, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Crispin Costales.

In his welcome remarks during the Opening Program, Dr. Romo welcomed the students, employees and parents with school updates and reminders.

“This year is special because we will start the SYP for senior high school. For the Grades 11 scholars, for sure, you will enjoy your academic experiences”, Dr. Romo expressed.

Grade 7 scholar, Rei Benedick Mallillin, in his message of expectation mentioned how privileged and lucky they were to be Pisay scholars.

“Mas marami yatang expectations sina nanay at tatay kaysa sa amin”, he added in his speech.

Teachers and staff were also introduced by the Division Chiefs and Department Heads.

Meanwhile, discussion about scholarship agreement, academic matters, guidance services, dormitory rules and other concerns were discussed by selected personnel to the Grade 7 scholars and their parents in the Orientation Program.

An orientation for Grade 11 scholars was also conducted focusing on the Specialization Year Program (SYP) was facilitated by the Curriculum and Instruction Services Division, headed by Dr. Aimee Marie C. Gragasin.#
