Redemption has finally come to the Province of Nueva Vizcaya, represented by Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus, as it emerged as the champion in the Regional Tourism Quiz held at the City of Ilagan Hotel and Convention Center on September 27, 2016.

Hailing from Pisay CVC is the 2016 Provincial Tourism Quiz champion, Christlen Carlo Olivares of X-Muon, who competed with five other contestants from the provinces of Cagayan and Quirino, and the cities of Cauayan, Ilagan and Tuguegarao.

Olivares was also last year's representative of Nueva Vizcaya in the regional level, but landed second to the contestant from Quirino General High School after losing in the tie-breaker round. This year, he made a fierce comeback as he copped the title and redeemed the championship that slipped through his fingers last year.

“I was so nervous at first because I know that I need to make redemption from last year's one-point deficit. But it was suddenly lost when I gained the lead during the latter half of the quiz bee. Even though I only had a day to prepare, I am very happy to finally get the regional title this year,” declares Olivares.

In the first half of the quiz bee, Olivares was safe at the second spot, with one point difference from his closest contender from Cagayan National High School. During the second half of the quiz with only ten questions remaining, Olivares was able to recover, finally edging out his closest rival until the last question with a two-point advantage, earning a total score of 15 points out of the 20 questions.

“PSHS-CVC's attempt to bring home the title this year was not easy. Christlen just came from the PSYSC Science Olympiad National Finals, and we were left with a very limited time to prepare for the Regional Tourism Quiz. But I have seen how passionate he was in our a-day-before-the-contest review session. I prayed to God not for Christlen to win, but for his efforts to be rewarded according to His divine will, and for victory to belong to the most deserving,” says Christine V. Ordinario, the perennial coach for the tourism quiz bee.

Olivares was awarded a certificate, freebies from the Department of Tourism, and Php7, 000.00.

The Regional Tourism Quiz is one of the activities conducted by the Department of Tourism Regional Office in celebration of the 2016 World Tourism Day with the theme “Tourism for All: Promoting Universal Accessibility.” #
