Bañez cops first national individual award

Three awards were not enough to make The Pisay Explorer, the official student publication in English of Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus, an outstanding school paper (OSP) of the country during the National Schools Press Conference held at Subic, Pampanga last April 7-13, 2014.

For a publication to become an outstanding paper, four awards must be clinched out of the six categories contested among school papers.

The Pisay Explorer won in three categories; 2nd Best News Page, 3rd Best Sports Page and 5th Best Science and Technology Page.

It was a golden year for the publication. This feat is overwhelming but will pose as a challenge to sustain the publication’s excellence or even surpassed what we achieved this year”, publication adviser Harold Gallo mentioned.

In the regional level, the publication stole the title from perennial champion Regional Science High School’s The Excelsior.

For the past 3 years Pisay – CVC’s publication had been a consistent 3rd place winner but this year it won 1st place in Sports and Editorial Pages, 2nd place in News, Features Page and Science and Technology pages and Layout and Page Design which paved way for the clinching of the title.

“I’m glad that the efforts of the staff and contributors had been rewarded. I hope that that Pisayers will also be aware of the happenings around them as they searched for the untarnished truth”,  Associate Editor Wilnice Pica D. Rosario pointed.

Furthermore, Mr. Ceasar Quinn Bañez copped the first individual award of Pisay – CVC in the NSPC as he placed fifth in Sports Writing English.

It was so fulfilling and also an honor, because all of our hardwork paid off”, quipped Bañez, who is now an Applied Physics scholar of the University of the Philippines – Manila.

Bañez was a second placer in both the division and regional levels.

Christine Joy T. Pimentel also represented PSHS-CVC as a contestant in Pagsulat ng Editoryal.

Gallo and Zenaida T. Manzano served as the coaches of the scholars and mentors of English and Filipino publications, The Explorer and Ang Siklab, respectively.

Other PSHS campuses also won in the paper contests like the Bicol Region Campus, Central Luzon Campus, Southern Mindanao Campus and Main Campus.#
